How to Create Bootable Installation Media for Windows Server 2016

After you’ve downloaded the Windows Server 2016 .iso file, the next step is to create a bootable USB drive to perform the installation.

Note: Ensure your USB device has at least 16 GB of available space.

The recommended tool for this task is:

Rufus

  1. Download Rufus for free here.
  2. Scroll down to the Download section and select the latest version of Rufus.
  3. Insert the USB drive and launch the Rufus application.
  4. Click Select and locate the Windows Server 2016 .iso file you want to use.
  5. Then, click Start and wait while the bootable USB drive is created.
  6. Note: When the Customize Windows Installation popup appears, choose the Disable Data Collection option and proceed.
  7. Once the process is complete and the progress bar indicates Ready, click Close. Your bootable USB is now ready to install Windows Server 2016.
