Guide to Setting Up Windows 8 on Mac via Bootcamp
Note: These devices no longer use Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021. And Apple devices with an M1 chip.
To check if you can install Windows 8, follow these steps:
- Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar.
- Select About this Mac to view your system information.
Note: On Macs with an Intel processor, you will see Processor. On Macs with the Apple logo, you will see Chip.
Proceed with the following process:
Check for Available Software Updates
Note: Before installing Windows, ensure all macOS updates are installed.
- Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences.
- Click on Software Update.
- If no updates are available, a message will indicate the system is up to date.
Note: The system will automatically search for updates. Wait a few seconds for the search to complete. If updates are available, click Update now and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the updates.
Note: If the Mac restarts after installing an update, reopen Software Update to install any additional updates.
Prepare the Mac to Install Windows
The Boot Camp Assistant prepares the Mac by creating a new partition for Windows called BOOTCAMP and downloading the Boot Camp support program.
Note: If using a portable Mac computer, connect it to the mains before continuing.
- Insert your USB into the Mac and open Boot Camp Assistant > Applications > Utilities.
- On the introduction screen, click Continue.
- Select all options and click Continue.
- Select the Windows 8 .iso file you have downloaded and the USB drive where you want to create the installation file.
- Decide how much space you need for the Windows partition by dragging the centre bar and click Install.
- Your Mac will restart to begin the installation of Windows 8.
Note: The partition size cannot be changed afterwards.

Install Boot Camp on Windows
After installing Windows, the Boot Camp drivers compatible with your Mac will begin to install.
- In the Boot Camp installer on Windows, follow the on-screen instructions.
- When the installation is complete, click Finish.
- Once your device restarts, follow any additional installation program instructions.
Note: Do not click the Cancel button on any of the installer panels.
Note: If a message appears stating that the software you are installing has not passed the Windows logo test, click Continue.
Note: You do not need to respond to installer dialogue boxes that briefly appear during the installation process. If a dialogue box asks you to install device software, click Install. If nothing happens, check for hidden windows requiring your attention.
Note: If the compatibility program does not install automatically, you will need to install it manually.
